Description

Barretto et al evaluated patients with endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) for predictors of survival. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Patient selection: endomyocardial fibrosis

Factors associated with decreased survival:

(1) NYHA functional Class III or IV

(2) biventricular involvement

(3) moderate or severe right ventricular involvement

(4) atrioventricular valve regurgitation

A patient at risk for poor survival may benefit from surgical resection of the fibrous tissue and AV valve replacement if performed by an experienced surgeon.
