A patient with methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) may have significant defects in dental enamel.
Risk factors for enamel defects:
(1) severe disease
(2) renal dysfunction
(3) high salivary content of methylmalonic acid
The concentration of methylmalonic acid in saliva from a patient with MMA can be 50 times greater than normal, resulting in a significant acid load.
Manifestations:
(1) diffuse opacities
(2) enamel hypoplasia
(3) caries
