Description

In an emergency one or more alarms may be activated to warn employees that an emergency is occurring. An employee alarm system can be any piece of equipment and/or device designed to inform employees that an emergency exists or to signal the presence of a hazard requiring urgent attention.

Types of audible alarms:

(1) bells

(2) horns

(3) horns

(4) voice announcements (loudspeaker, mobile phone, radio, etc)

Audible alarms may be accompanied by a visual alarm such as a flashing or strobing light.

Different alarms or different patterns may be used, depending on the circumstances:

(1) type of emergency (fire, hazardous release, etc)

(2) intended response (complete evacuation, shelter in place, other)

A fire alarm must be distinctive from other alarms and should not be used for any other purpose.

Special situations:

(1) employees with impaired hearing or visual impairment

(2) high background noise

Alarms should be operable. They should be protected from damage and tested periodically. They should be able to operate if electricity is lost.

Alarms should be placed so that all employees are notified.

All employees should be trained about the alarm system and the appropriate response to each type.

Drills should be conducted to reinforce training.
