Emphysematous vaginitis is a rare but benign condition that is self-limited.
The condition consists of multiple gas-filled cysts in the submucosa of the upper vagina and ectocervix. These can be seen on transvaginal echocardiography or biopsy.
The cysts often range from 1 to 5 mm in diameter.
Clinical features:
(1) vaginal discharge with or without blood
(2) vulvar pruritis
(3) crepitus on vaginal exam
It may be confused with other conditions such as cervical carcinoma. There is also a risk of overtreatment.
