Description

Schoenenberger et al reported the Emergence Geriatric Screen (EGS) tool for evaluating an older adult in the Emergency Department. There are 4 domains, two of which are fall risk and mobility. The authors are from University of Bern in Switzerland.

Patient: age >= 75 years in the Emergency Department

Falls:

(1) fall is the reason for the ED visit

(2) >= 2 falls in the past year

If one or both findings are present, then falls is a problem.

Mobility:

(1) required an aid walking indoors or outdoors before presenting to the ED

(2) currently confined to bed

(3) currently needs help to get out of bed

(4) Timed Up and Go test >= 20 seconds

If one or more findings are present, then there is impaired mobility.
