Schoenenberger et al reported the Emergence Geriatric Screen (EGS) tool for evaluating an older adult in the Emergency Department. There are 4 domains, one of which is cognition. The authors are from University of Bern in Switzerland.


Patient: age >= 75 years in the Emergency Department

 

The score is based on the Ottawa 3DY test (with different word to spell backwards).

 

Questions:

(1) day of the week

(2) today's date (+/- 1 day)

(3) year

(4) able to spell "radio" backwards ("oidar")

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 4

• A score >= 1 is associated with impaired cognition.
