Than et al developed the Emergency Department Assessment of Chest Pain Score (EDACS) for evaluating a patient with chest pain in the Emergency Department (ED). The EDACS can be used to triage the patient. The authors are from multiple sites from New Zealand, Australia, the United States and the Netherlands.
Patient selection: >= 18 years of age with chest pain
Criteria for low risk - all of the following:
(1) EDACS < 16
(2) no new ischemic changes on ECG
(3) both serum troponin at 0 and 2 hours negative
If the patient is low risk then the patient is safe to discharge for early outpatient follow-up.
If the patient is not low risk then the usual chest pain protocol is followed.
