Description

The source of electricity for an instrument or device is critical for proper operation.

The electrical source should meet the specifications for the instrument or device manufacturer.

A circuit should not be overloaded. Plug in one device per electrical outlet. Avoid multi-outlet power strips.

Use a safety-lock plug or outlet cover to prevent the device from being unplugged.

There should be signage warning not to unplug the device.

Label fuses and circuit breakers to alert people not to turn off power to the device.

The electricity should be as clean as possible, preferably with a line conditioner and surge suppression.

Avoid using an outlet activated by an accessible wall switch.

Avoid the use of an extension cord when possible. If one must be used then it should meet specifications for the device and be rated.

Critical devices should be on emergency power.

Loss of power to critical instruments such as refrigerators should trigger an alarm.
