Some people start stealing metal when commodity prices are high. Stolen copper wire and pipes has a ready market. However, stealing copper electrical wire can be dangerous.


Injury occurs when the person tries to steal wire that is carrying electricity.

 

The typical person is a young male who is unemployed, poor or a criminal.

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) ignorance about electricity

(2) failure to check if a wire is electrified, assuming that it is safe

(3) trying to steal wire from a high voltage line

(4) fall from height (as from a roof or ladder)

(5) intoxication

(6) lack of safety equipment (gloves, grounding)

(7) standing on a wet or metal surface

 

The victim may not seek medical attention because of criminal behavior.
