Various devices have been developed to reduce the risk for a person caught in an avalanche. This can help to locate and to extricate the person. However, their use does not guarantee survival.
Rescue devices include:
(1) a transceiver to help locate the person
(2) inflated airbag to provide air pocket and/or reduce burial depth
Having both devices improves the person's chances of rescue.
Risk factors for rescue failure for a person with a rescue device:
(1) transceiver turned off
(2) air bag not inflated
(3) alone or everyone caught in avalanche (no rescuer)
(4) massive avalanche
(5) high-speed impact with a tree, rock or other structure
(6) failure to adhere to avalanche avoidance precautions
