The effective dose equivalent (EDE) for a radiation exposure can be calculated based on the its amount and distribution.
Parameters:
(1) radiation dose equivalent at each organ in milliSieverts (mSv)
(2) organ dose weighting factor
Organ
Weighting Factor
gonads
0.20 (0.08 - 0.25)
breasts
0.05 (0.05 - 0.15)
active (red) bone marrow
0.12
lung
colon
stomach
thyroid
0.05 (0.03 - 0.05)
bladder
0.05
liver
esophagus
skin
0.01
bone surfaces
0.01 (0.01 - 0.03)
remainder
The sum of the weighting factors equals 1 (whole body exposure).
total effective dose equivalent =
= SUM((radiation dose equivalent for organ) * (weighting factor for organ))
Acute radiation sickness may follow an acute exposure of 250 mSv (0.25 Sv, 25 rem) and usually follows doses of 1,000 mSv (1 Sv).
