Description

Edentulous orodyskinesia (ED) is a movement disorder that may affect edentulous patients.


Clinical features:

(1) aimless and involuntary oral movements affecting lips, tongue and/or mandible

(2) edentulous status with history of dental extractions

(3) usually no or minimal functional disability

(4) usually no or little pain

(5) exclusion of drugs or other causes of orofacial dyskinesia, especially tardive dyskinesia

 

Risk factors:

(1) inadequate dentures with inadequate occlusal relationships

(2) biomechanical sources of dental instability
