Description

Supernumerary teeth in the maxilla or mandible can occur. Less common is the presence of a tooth in the palate or nose.


Teeth are derived from ectoderm of the first pharyngeal arch and ectomesenchyme of the neural crest.

 

Presentation of ectopic tooth in the palate or nose may include:

(1) incidental on dental or cranial radiograph

(2) pain

(3) intranasal mass

(4) rhinorrhea

 

Some cases may be hereditary.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) traumatic dislocation

(2) teratoma
