Purpose: To use the performance status of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) to separate patients with cancer into groups based on clinical impairment.

Description

The Performance Status of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) separates patients with cancer into 5 groups based on severity of impairment caused by their neoplastic disease. This is similar to the WHO performance status classification and may be referred to as the Zubrod scale based on the first author of the original report.


Patient Findings

no symptoms

0

patient symptomatic but ambulatory

1

patient bedridden less than half the day

2

patient bedridden half the day or longer

3

patient chronically bedridden and requires assistance with activities of daily living

4

 

The ECOG scale can be correlated with the Karnofsky Performance Scale.
