Carbon monoxide damages many organs, including the heart. Moderate to severe poisoning can cause alterations in the ECG.
ECG changes of myocardial toxicity:
(1) ischemic changes in ST segments
(2) ischemic changes in T waves
(3) arrhythmias
These changes may be accompanied b:
(1) angina
(2) alterations in serum markers (CK, troponin)
(3) congestive heart failure
(4) sudden death
The presence of myocardial injury is a criterion for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
