Description

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive mucocutaneous ulcer is recently described a lymphoproliferative disorder.

Sites affected:

(1) oral cavity

(2) skin

(3) gastrointestinal tract

Clinical features:

(1) shallow, well-circumscribed mucosal or cutaneous ulcer

(2) absence of lymphadenopathy

(3) absence of B symptoms

(4) immunosuppression or immunocompromised state

A biopsy shows a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with large cells that are Reed-Sternberg like with large nucleoli and which stain positive for CD20. Cells also show nuclear expression of EBV.

The prognosis is generally good, especially if the cause for the immunodeficiency can be stopped or controlled.
