A person living in a region at risk for earthquakes should take a number of precautions, just in case.


Personal items:

(1) disaster/emergency supply kit, modified for special needs

(2) shoes nearby (to avoid stepping on broken glass)

 

Prevention of falling items within the home:

(1) secure refrigerator

(2) latches on cabinets

(3) secure TV

(4) secure other top heavy items

(5) contain glass items

(6) secure bookshelves

 

Fire prevention:

(1) open flame

(2) gas supply

(3) electric utility wires

(4) fuel storage

(5) fire extinguisher

 

Structural failure:

(1) collapse of brick chimney

(2) fall of decorative facade

(3) fall of roof-top items

(4) building collapse

 

Environmental hazards:

(1) risk of liquefaction beneath the home

(2) nearby dangers (dams, tsunami, landslides, volcano, etc).
