Tremors can occur in the earth in the absence of quakes. These are imperceptible to humans and do not cause damage.
Associations:
(1) seismic: seen in subduction zones, where they may be associated with a slow slip
(2) volcanic: caused by movement of magma or hot water in volcano
The tracing on a seismograph shows:
(1) a gradual onset without a jolt
(2) weak "rumbling" movements for minutes or hours
(3) gradual tapering off
