Description

Marini et al reported the Early Wound Healing Score (EHS) for evaluating the soft tissue incision line after periodontal surgery. This can be used to monitor healing after surgery. The authors are from Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Zurich.

Patient selection: status post periodontal surgery

Parameters:

(1) clinical signs of re-epithelialization

(2) clinical signs of hemostasis

(3) clinical signs of inflammation

(4) suppuration

Parameter

Finding

Points

re-epithelialization

visible gap between incision margins

0

contact between incision margins

3

merged incision margins

6

hemostasis

bleeding

0

presence of fibrin on the incision margins

1

absence of fibrin on incision margins

2

inflammation

redness over > 50% of incision length

0

pronounced swelling

0

redness < 50% of incision length

1

absence of redness

2

subscore =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

If suppuration is present, then the final score is 0, else the subscore.

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score the better the status of the incision wound.
