Description

Samuelsson et al identified factors associated with falls in the year after a stroke. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg who participated in the The Fall Study of Gothenburg (FallsGOT).

Patient selection: stroke

Outcome: fall within 6 or 12 months after the stroke

Predictors of a fall:

(1) poor postural control in the acute phase after the stroke (OR 3.9)

(2) using a walking aid (OR 2.8)

where:

• Postural control was based on the Swedish modified version of the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (SwePASS).
