Description

Chen et al developed a protocol for evaluating the response of a schizophrenic patient to therapy with an atypical antipsychotic agent. This can help to decide if therapy should be continued or changed. The authors are from National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Patient selection: schizophrenia starting therapy

Therapy: optimal dosage of olanzapine, risperidone and palipeeridone (atypical antipsychotics)

Goal: to predict treatment response at 12 weeks based on response after 2 and 4 weeks of therapy

Parameters:

(1) PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale), which ranges from 30 to 210

(2) treatment response after 2 and 4 weeks of therapy

treatment response =

= ((baseline PANSS) - (followup PANSS)) / ((baseline PANSS) - 30) * 100%

Improvement is a treatment response >= 25%.
