O'Regan et al reported Early Maternal Infection Prompts (EMIP) to identify a pregnant woman with early acute sepsis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from early initiation of antibiotic therapy. The authors are from University Hospital in Dublin.
NOTE: Some of the criteria overlap with the screening criteria from the IMEWS.
Screening criteria:
(1) temperature >= 37.5°C
(2) heart rate >= 100 beats per minute
(3) respiratory rate >= 20 breaths per minute
(4) systolic blood pressure <= 100 mm Hg
At least 1 of these findings was present in 91% of suspected severe infection.
Causes of suspected infection included:
(1) acute chorioamnionitis
(2) urinary tract infection
(3) pneumonia
(4) post Cesarean section
