Early childhood caries (ECC) refers to the early onset of caries in children.
Synonym: Baby Bottle Syndrome
Definition of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry:
(1) one or more caries in primary dentition
(2) age of patient < 6 years
Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC):
(1) ECC in a child < 3 years
(2) decay to smooth surfaces
Risk factors:
(1) enamel hypoplasia (hypoplasia associated)
(2) colonization by cariogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, lactobacilli, other)
(3) cariogenic diet (sugary drinks, etc)
(4) poverty or ill health
(5) poor dental hygiene
(6) poor access to dental care
