Description

Early adopter bias is a form of selection bias that must be controlled for when evaluating the performance of a new technology.

An early adopter is a person who wants to try a new technology as soon as possible.

Personality traits of an early adopter:

(1) likes taking risks

(2) wants to and enjoys doing novel things

(3) tends to demand the technology and will search out someone who will provide it

An early adopter also tends to be more affluent and better educated. The technology providers may be more selective in their subjects. These factors tend to be associated with a better outcome. In early adopter bias these factors tend to make the new technology appear to work better than later when it is used in the general population.
