Description

Exposure to styrene can result in visual disturbances.

Exposures are usually occupational:

(1) manufacture of styrene

(2) occupational use of styrene

Clinical effects:

(1) distorted color vision (dyschromatopsia) with increased color confusion index

(2) disordered contrast sensitivity

(3) altered visual acuity

(4) neurobehavioral changes

The disorder of color vision is usually reversible if the person is in a styrene-free environment for several weeks.

Workers can be monitored by measuring urinary concentrations of mandelic acid (MA) plus phenylglyoxcylic acid (PGA) per gram creatinine.
