Description

Bartle et al evaluating endotracheal tube depth in infants weighing less than 1 kilogram. Tube malpositioning can result in serious complications in premature infants. The authors are from Duke University.

Parameters:

(1) current body weight in grams

Body Weight

Insertion Depth

< 500 grams

5.0 cm + (1 cm per kg)

500 to 999 grams

5.5 cm + (1 cm per kg)

The endotracheal tube was only accurately placed in about 70% of patients. It is important that tube placement is confirmed by rapid radiographic assessment.
