Description

The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) gives criteria for the diagnosis of pathological gambling.


 

Criteria - both of the following:

(1) 5 or more behaviors (see below) indicating persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior

(2) The behavior is not better accounted for by manic episodes.

 

Behaviors:

(1) preoccupied

(2) escalating sums required to achieve a desired excitement

(3) unsuccessful efforts to control

(4) is restless and irritable if not gambling

(5) seeks relief

(6) chases after losses

(7) lies to others

(8) has committed illegal acts

(9) has jeopardized or lost something significant

(10) relies on others for a bailout
