Dissection of the aorta is a potential complication of Marfan's syndrome. Drugs that increase pressure or flow in the aorta should be avoided. These drugs may also be associated with rupture of aneurysms in smaller arteries.
Medications to avoid:
(1) drugs that stimulate the cardiovascular system, including caffeine and decongestants (phenylephrine, etc)
(2) drugs that cause vasoconstriction, including tryptans
(3) drugs that cause hypertension as a side effect
Drugs of abuse to avoid:
(1) cocaine
(2) amphetamine and methamphetamine
Withdrawal reactions (with hypertension) can also be hazardous
