Description

Some drugs may allow a patient taking any or as much of drug that may have unwanted side effects.


A drug-sparing regimen provides an alternative to a therapy that may have unwanted side effects, that may be expensive, or that may be in short supply.

 

Mechanisms may include:

(1) synergistic activity

(2) alternative effect on condition to the target drug class

 

Classes of drugs where drug sparing may be desired:

(1) corticosteroids

(2) opioids and opiates

(3) nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (HIV)

(4) benzodiazepine

 

Sparing may be desirable for other medical therapies, such as blood transfusion.
