Aziz et al reviewed drug-induced disorders of the tongue. Some drugs cause color changes in the tongue surface The authors are from Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Royal Dutch Pharmacists and University of Groningen in The Netherlands.


Color change in the tongue may be due to:

(1) glossitis with erythema (red)

(2) discoloration (black, blue, brown, grey), which may include increased melanin production

(3) hairy tongue (yellow, brown, black). associated with enlargement of the filiform papillae

(4) coated tongue

 

Glossitis may be associated with:

(1) many antibiotics

(2) antifungal agents

(3) antiviral agents

(4) chemotherapy

 

Tongue discoloration may be associated with:

(1) chlorhexidine

(2) tetracyclines

(3) penicillin antibiotics

(4) ribavirin

(5) macrolides

(6) peginterferon

(7) methyldopa

(8) azoles

(9) amitriptyline

 

Hairy tongue can be caused by:

(1) metronidazole

(2) hydrogen peroxide

(3) Bactrim

 

Coated tongue may be associated with:

(1) palonosetron

(2) metronidazole

(3) varenicline

(4) darunavir
