Description

Therapy with a number of drugs may be linked to development of dental caries.


Classes of drugs that may be associated with dental caries:

(1) antidepressants

(2) antiepileptics

(3) antipsychotics

(4) atropinic drugs

(5) beta-2 adrenoreceptor agonist drugs

(6) bisphosphonates

(7) corticosteroids

(8) immunomodulating drugs

(9) opioids

 

Pathogenesis of the dental caries:

(1) changes in salivary flow and/or composition (reduced flow, low pH), particularly drugs with antimuscarinic activity

(2) changes in bone metabolism (with demineralization)

(3) hyperglycemia

(4) immunosuppression

(5) unspecified
