Description

A double standard refers to application of one standard for one group and a second standard for a second group. Triple or quadruple standards are also possible.

Features of a double standard:

(1) A group is divided into two categories usually by a person or group of people in a position of power.

(2) One set of rules is applied to the first category under specific circumstances.

(3) A second set of rules is applied to the second category under exactly the same circumstances.

(4) The choice of rule sets is based solely on the category and not the circumstances.

(5) Usually the person or group in charge has a "reason" to justify dichotomous behavior.

Usually the rules applied have opposite outcomes:

(1) one group is punished and the second group is not punished (or may be rewarded).

(2) one group has a set of restrictions applied and the second group does not

(3) one group is protected and the second group is not
