Description

Extravasation of doxorubicin from an intravenous infusion can cause serious soft tissue injury. Prompt infusion of dexrazoxane can reduce the severity of the damage.


 

Brand name for dexrazoxane: Totect in USA, Savene in EU

 

Patient selection: A patient with an extravasation of doxorubicin

 

Doses of dexrazoxane: given intravenously 3 days in a row

Dosage reduction for renal failure: Reduce the dose by 50% if the creatinine clearance is < 40 mL per minute.

 

Timing of the first infusion: as soon as possible after the onset; it should be no more than 6 hours after the event.
