Description

Some drugs have an active component that is an anion or cation and which is formulated with an oppositely charged moiety to give a salt. The dose to administer is based on the amount of the active compound present.

molecular weight for salt in grams =

= (molecular weight for active component) + (molecular weight for oppositely charged moiety)

dose for the salt in mg =

= (dose for the active component in mg) * (molecular weight of the salt) / (molecular weight of the active component)

dose for the active component in mg =

= (dose for the salt in mg) * (molecular weight of active component) / (molecular weight of the salt)

Some drugs may be available as different salts. Once the dose for the active compound is known, it is relatively simple to calculate the doses for the different salts available.
