Description

A bronchodilator may be administered continuously by nebulizer (continuous bronchodilator therapy). The preparation of the nebulizer solution required for a treatment period can be calculated based on the constraint parameters.


 

Parameters:

(1) dose to be delivered in mg per hour

(2) strength of the drug solution in percent (X grams per 100 mL, from 0 to 100)

(3) duration of treatment in hours

(4) nebulizer output in mL per hour

 

volume of drug solution delivered in mL per hour =

= (dose in mg per hour) / (strength of drug solution in mg per mL) =

= (dose in mg per hour) / (10 * X)

 

volume of drug solution required for treatment period =

= (treatment period in hours) * (volume of drug solution delivered in mL per hour)

 

volume delivered by nebulizer during treatment period =

= (nebulizer output in mL per hour) * (treatment period in hours)

 

volume of diluent to mix with drug solution at start of treatment period =

= (volume delivered by nebulizer) - (volume of drug solution required)
