Tursi et al reported a simple clinical symptom score to evaluate a patient with diverticular disease. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and South America participating in the DICA International Group.
Patient selection: diverticular disease
Parameters:
(1) constipation
(2) diarrhea
(3) abdominal pain score
(3) meteorism (tympany with abdominal distention due to excess in the gastrointestinal tract)
Each parameter is graded on a VAS scale from 0 (none) to 10 (extreme).
total score =
= (VAS score for constipation) + (VAS score for diarrhea) + (VAS score for abdominal pain) + (VAS score for meteorism)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 40
• The higher the score the more severe the symptoms.
• Individual symptoms > 2 were of increasing concern.
