Flor et al reported the Diverticular Disease Severity Score (DDSS) for evaluating a patient with sigmoid divertculosis. The athors are from multiple institutions in Milan and the United States.
Patient selection: sigmoid diverticulosis
Exam: CT colonography
Parameters:
(1) maximum colon wall thickness in mm
(2) minimum sigmoid colon lumen diameter in mm
Maximum Wall Thickness
DDSS
< 3 mm
1
3 to 8 mm
2
>= 8
3
Minimum Lumen Diameter
DDSS
>= 15 mm
1
5 to 14 mm
2
< 5 mm
4
final DDSS = MAX(DDSS for wall thickness, DDSS for lumen diameter)
Interpretation:
• The higher the DDS the more severe the diverticular disease.
• DDSS 4 is associated with coexisting colon pathology (Crohn's disease, cancer, etc).
