Description

A person who is depressed may distorted views which can affect decisions that are made. These can contribute to the person feeling “stuck”.


 

A person who is depressed may be affected by (with some overlapping):

(1) dysfunctional thinking (all-or-nothing)

(2) overgeneralization and catastrophising

(3) focusing on and amplifying negatives

(4) discounting of and dismissing positives (negating)

(5) demoralization and expectation of failure

(6) blaming self for problems inappropriately (personalization)

(7) blaming others for problems inappropriately

(8) labeling

(9) emotional reasoning with distortion of facts or events

(10) perfectionism

(11) jumping to conclusions or rushing to judgment

 

Other factors:

(1) influence of medications

(2) effects of self-medication

(3) isolation and loss of social support

(4) health problems
