Description

The distance saturation product (DSP) can help to identify a patient with certain pulmonary diseases who may be at risk increased mortality.

Patient selection: advanced pulmonary disease

Parameters:

(1) 6 minute walking distance in meters

(2) minimum oxygen saturation during the walking test in percent (used as a decimal fraction)

distance saturation product in meter•percent =

= (distance from 6MWD) * (minimum oxygen saturation)

Interpretation:

• The lower the DSP the greater the risk of mortality.

• A DSP < 200 is associated with increased 1-year mortality in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

• A DSP < 280 was associated with 6-year mortality in a patient with bronchiectasis.
