Description

A variety of medications may be delivered in a pressurized can or cannister. These need to be safely disposed of.

General caveats:

(1) An empty pressurized cannister or can should not be burned.

(2) Puncturing a pressurized can or cannister may result in an explosion.

(3) A pressurized can or cannister should not be disposed of in general trash.

(4) Refer to the product information sheet for instructions on disposal.

The correct disposal of a pressurized can or cannister depends on the specific product and the status of the container.

A partially full can or cannister may need to be disposed of as hazardous or medical waste.

An empty can or cannister may be recyclable.

If the contents are nonhazardous then the can or cannister should be emptied by spraying until nothing comes out.

An old cannister with chlorofluorocarbon as a propellant should not be emptied due to release of the propellant.

If the contents are hazardous then do not empty the cannister. Determine the proper disposal method from a pharmacist or the product information sheet.
