Burwell and Charnley used radiographic criteria to evaluate the adequacy of reduction after therapy of a displaced ankle fracture. These are based on the criteria of Magnusson, Vasli and Klossner.
Adequacy of reduction:
(1) anatomic (good)
(2) fair
(3) poor
Parameters:
(1) medial or lateral displacement of the medial and lateral malleoli
(2) angulation
(3) longitudinal displacement of medial and lateral malleoli
(4) posterior displacement of the lateral malleolus
(5) proximal displacement of a large posterior fragment
(6) residual displacement of the talus

where:
• A posterior fragment large enough to involve the articular surface was termed a posterior malleolus.
• Longitudinal displacement and posterior displacement of the lateral malleolus may refer to the same feature.
