Thom described the discomfort index (DI) in 1959. Since then several modifications have been proposed.

(2) wet bulb temperature (Tw) in °C

= (0.4 * (dry bulb temperature)) + (0.4 * (wet bulb temperature)) + 8.3
The DI is reported in discomfort units (DU).

= (0.5 * (dry bulb temperature)) + (0.5 * (wet bulb temperature))
modified discomfort index (MDI) of Moran and Pandolf =
= (0.3 * (dry bulb temperature)) + (0.75 * (wet bulb temperature))
