Durr et al developed a simple score for evaluating patients during sinonasal endoscopy. The score correlates with other measures of rhinosinusitis. The authors are from the University of California in San Francisco.
Patient selection: sinonasal endoscopy
Parameters for left and right nasal cavities
(1) discharge
(2) inflammation
(3) polyps/edema
Each parameter is scored from 0 (none) to 10 (extreme) with 5 assigned for moderate severity. For discharge 5 indicates thick mucus and 10 gross purulence. For polyps/edema 5 indicates marked edema with no polyps and 10 indicates polyps filling the nasal cavity.
DIP score =
= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 30
• The higher the score the more severe the rhinosinusitis.
Performance:
• The score has good interrater reliability and test-retest reliability.
