Description

A patient with one or more chronic conditions should prepare a disaster kit with enough medication and supplies to survive a disaster. The kit needs to be checked one or more times a year to update or to replace outdated items.


 

Chronic medical conditions that require supplies or medications:

(1) diabetes

(2) severe hypertension

(3) transplant recipient

(4) COPD or other patient requiring supplemental oxygen

(5) hypercoagulable state

(6) certain infections

(7) heart disease

(8) specialized diet

(9) pain

(10) chronic renal failure

 

Needs:

(1) sufficient medication to last 7 to 10 days

(2) sufficient supplies to last 7 to 10 days

(3) backup equipment

(4) a means of preserving the medications

(5) a means of running equipment for 7 to 10 days

(6) a means of communication to call for help

(7) ID bracelet, a list of key medications and a brief medical history

(8) a basic first aid kit
