Description

Clear polarizable microcrystals may be seen in histologic sections for a variety of reasons. A penel of stains can help to distinguish between the crystals.

Situation: polarizable clear microcrystal

Staining panel:

(1) Movat pentachrome stain

(2) Sirius Red stan for amyloid

(3) von Kossa

(4) alizarin red at pH4,1 to 4.3

(5) oil red O (after 72 hour incubation)

Additional stains:

(1) GMS: stains cellulose black but not talc

(2) PAS: stains cellulose

(3) Congo red: stains cellulose

Some of these crystals (cellulose, talc) can be seen within small blood vessels of people who inject drugs intravenously.

If the identification is still in doube, then infrared spectroscopy should be performed.
