It is important to determine the nature of any unusual material passed from the vagina.
Differential diagnosis of material passed per vaginum:
(1) miscarriage (abortus)
(2) retained secundines
(3) blood clot
(4) decidual cast
(5) endometrial polyp
(6) rhabdomyosarcoma or other tumor
(7) intrauterine or intravaginal foreign body
(8) material passed via a rectovaginal fistula
An examination of the material may consist of:
(1) X-ray (rarely performed)
(2) gross examination of the material
(3) microscopic examination
