The various types of retinal detachment need to be distinguished from a number of other conditions.
Conditions in the differential diagnosis of retinal detachment:
(1) retinoschisis (splitting of retina into 2 layers)
(2) choroidal detachment (choroidal effusion, choroidal tumor)
(3) retinal tumor
(4) vitreous hemorrhage (intravitreal optical illusion)
(5) suprachoroidal hemorrhage
(6) retinal or subretinal cyst
