Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may affect all parts of the eye. One presentation is red eye.
Localization in the eye: external ocular and anterior segment
Reasons for "red eye" due to SLE:
(1) keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye)
(2) episcleritis
(3) scleritis (anterior-posterior, diffuse-nodular, necrotizing)
(4) chronic noninfectious conjunctivitis
(5) keratitis or keratopathy (superficial punctate keratopathy, recurrent epithelial erosions, peripheral ulcerative keratitis, interstitial stromal keratitis, keratoendothelitis)
(6) anterior uveitis
Differential diagnosis:
(1) infectious causes of red eye
