Description

Diplopia (double vision) following traumatic injury may be due to a number of conditions.


Causes of post-traumatic diplopia include:

(1) transection, avulsion, hematoma or contusion of extraocular muscles

(2) avulsion of the pulley of the superior oblique muscle

(3) decompensation of a preexisting ocular phoria

(4) hematoma in the orbit

(5) orbital fracture

(6) orbital or intracranial damage to the third, fourth and/or sixth cranial nerve with palsy

(7) whiplash injury

 

Causes of post-traumatic monocular diplopia (double vision affecting 1 eye) include:

(1) subluxation of the lens

(2) detachment or edema of the macula
