Description

Patellar tendinopathy is a cause of knee pain in athletes. It needs to be distinguished from other causes of knee pain.

Patient selection: athlete with suspected patellar tendinopathy

Conditions in the differential diagnosis of patellar tendinopathy:

(1) patellofemoral pain syndrome

(2) fat-pad syndrome (Hoffa's syndrome)

(3) tears in the meniscus

(4) degeneration of knee cartilage

(5) referred pain

The diagnosis may be complicated if more than one cause is present (mixed knee pain).
